The Radio Physics and Electronics (RPE) Association was formed in 1962 exactly after two years of its 1st Reunion in the department. The seed of the annual reunion was planted through a small get together held in 1959 in the presence of Prof. S K Mitra, with the departmental students and a limited number of ex-students. Before this, up to 1958, it used to hold jointly with the Physics Department. A fully independent and exclusive reunion was first held in 1960 with Prof. J. N. Bhar as the President of the first reunion committee and Dr. A. K. Choudhury as the secretary.
The idea behind the formation of the RPE Association concretized during 1962 reunion under the leadership of Prof. B. R. Nag as the reunion secretary. Prof. J. S. Chatterjee was the President of the committee that year. According to Prof. Nag’s article ‘Amader Association-er Janmo Kotha’, that is, ‘The history of the formation of our association’ published in the souvenir of 1993, the RPE Association was formed to build up a close and strong relationship between the students and the alumni of the department. It was decided that the Annual Convention of the association would be held every year along with the reunion of the department. Prof. J. N. Bhar was the first President of the Steering Committee of the Association and Dr. A. K. Mahalanabis served as the first Secretary for 1963-64. The first annual convention was held in 1964. The first executive committee (1964-65) of the RPE Association was also headed by Prof. J. N. Bhar with Sri Ashok Kumar Bhattacharyya as the Secretary. As per the available records, 1966 souvenir is found to bear the name of the association printed on its cover page. This tradition is still being continued even after crossing nearly 60 years, although in some intermediate years we had to skip our annual convention under certain unavoidable circumstances. The Association celebrated its silver jubilee convention in 1993.
The golden jubilee event waits in the coming few years!!
